How could I forget! At least Fox had the decency to bring it back, but I mean, seriously! Who the hell is in charge there? No one willing to make an investment in quality programming, and they choose really, really crappy stuff instead!
One thing that I didn’t realize is that each episode of Firefly cost roughly $2 million. Not having anything to compare it to, I would guess that’s pretty high. I have no idea what synication allows for. Serenity cost $39 million (Universal budgeted $40, so it came in under budget), but it doesn’t look like it will recoup cost with domestic returns, which are around $24 million, and it’s being pulled from the larger theaters to make room (its not showing in any of the DC theaters that I know of). Everyone’s hoping the international returns are a bit better. Universal had said somewhere that if the movie made $50 million domestic and/or $80 million international, then they would green light a sequel. No one knows if that includes DVD profits or not (I sure hope so). I have to imagine the film also boosted sales of the TV episodes box set (though those numbers are harder to track).
I really hope it doesn’t completely die. It would be much better to have a TV series revived, but I’m not holding my breath for that one. Whedon is now writing the screen play for Wonder Woman and many of the actors are/will take off to bigger (and possibly better) things.
I guess its just one of those things… The short lived burns brightly I guess.

Okay, so I loved Serenity, and i never watched Firefly (but now i want to.) The sequal thing might happen after the DVD sales, which i think will be huge. A big part of why Universal decided to give the movie a go ahead was because of the DVD sales of the 13 eps.
And whilst I am not a big believer in Fox – they do keep giving Arrested Developement a chance, which deserves huge kudos!!
Oh and Joss Whedon is my hero. I wish i could work for him and JJ. Joss makes his acting debut in an episode of Veronica Mars on November 9th (i think)!!
Hope married life is treating you well!
I highly recommend Firefly. Its been a genuine blast (even Ann loves it, and is sad there are only 14 episodes! You have no idea how big a deal that is =) I’ve been good about trying to extend Firefly (I still have about 4 episodes left to watch).
I do think there is a chance for a sequel if DVD sales are good. However, after you watch Firefly, you realize how well it was suited to the TV episode format (a whole series of 40 min. episodes). I just love the characters. I love the ‘Verse. Its enthralling to watch and absorb.
I have a new appreciation for Joss now. I’m going to go back and watch Buffy. I watched a handful of episodes back in highschool but never really followed it.
Oh… and I really need to fix this comment area… Sorry about that Sim. I’ll fix the colors this evening!
Yay. So I’ve fixed the font issues.
I really wanted to go back and see Serenity in the theaters, but this is the first movie that I can remember that left so fast! This is also the first movie where I actually paid attention to box office returns… desparately wanting it to do well. (I honestly don’t think I can say that about any other show/movie).
Supposedly they are going to try to release the DVD before Christmas to capitalize on Xmas shopping returns, which I think is a good idea. I’m definitely going to try to expose Firefly and Serenity to my family when I go back home.
Oh and Sim, there is a chance Ann (and possibly me as well) will be in NY in the near future (Ann for work reasons). We’ll let you know as the chips fall.
hey – Serenity comes out on DVD Dec 20…:)…and let me know if you guys come up!!!
